CHURCH OFFICERS’ DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

ELDER

ELDERS constitute the Session, the church’s governing body. They oversee the spiritual and sacramental life of the church, make policy decisions, and serve as the congregational authority on all matters. Elders provide leadership for worship, congregational care, outreach and nurturing programs for all ages, both within the church and the community. Specific to Northeastern Presbyterian Church, Elders are required to:
  • Pray, attend worship regularly and actively participate in the stewardship of the church.
  • Attend monthly Session meetings and other meetings as required.
  • Assist with communion during worship service.
  • Take communion to the sick and shut-in.
  • Visit the sick and shut-in at home, in the hospitals, and in nursing homes.
  • Chair or co-chair at least one Session committee.
  • Oversee all financial matters.
  • Serve as Liturgist [once a year] as needed.
  • Perform other tasks as required.
  • Must be a member at Northeastern Presbyterian Church.

DEACON

DEACONS seek to ensure an experience of Christian community for all members. They minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless and to any who may be in distress. Deacons should demonstrate care and concern for the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of fellow worshippers. Their manner of life should demonstrate the Christian gospel, both within the church and in the community.  Specific to Northeastern Presbyterian Church, Deacons are required to:
  • Pray, attend worship regularly and actively participate in the stewardship of the church.
  • Visit the sick and shut-in at home, in hospitals, and in nursing homes.
  • Assist with communion during worship service.
  • Prepare the elements for communion and perform related tasks.
  • Assist in taking communion to the sick and shut-in.
  • Prepare baskets and/or gifts for the needy at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
  • Schedule greeters for Sunday morning services.
  • Assist with funerals and related activities.
  • Attend monthly meetings on the 3rd Sunday of each month and attend other meetings as required.
  • Respond to emergencies as they arise and perform tasks as required.
  • Serve as Liturgist once a year.
  • Must be a member at Northeastern Presbyterian Church.

TRUSTEE

TRUSTEES are stewards of the church’s resources. They manage church finances that support the mission of the church and are accountable to the Session.  Specific to Northeastern Presbyterian Church, Trustees are required to:
  • Pray, attend worship regularly and actively participate in the stewardship of the church.
  • Be available for the 10:00 a.m. service at least two Sundays a month to perform board duties.
  • Be available to attend special services or events to perform board duties.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Be conversant with numbers and accounting.
  • Attend monthly meetings of the board and with the Buildings and Grounds Committee.
  • Perform other tasks as required.
  • Must be a member at Northeastern Presbyterian Church.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

NOMINATING COMMITTEE members recommend to the congregation a slate of nominees to fill vacant positions on the Session, Board of Deacons, Board of Trustees and the Nominating Committee members for the following year.  Specific to Northeastern Presbyterian Church, Nominating Committee members are required to:
  • Pray, attend worship regularly and actively participate in the stewardship of the church.
  • Attend scheduled meetings.
  • Interview the nominees.
  • Perform other tasks as required.
  • Must be a member at Northeastern Presbyterian Church.
